With energy bills, Interest rates and home prices soar, it’s never been more difficult for aspiring first-time homebuyers to set foot in the property ladder. With the average age of a first time buyer in the UK now being 34, many young people today have no choice but to rent until they have managed to save enough for a deposit.
But for some like Sophie, renting is more than a stopgap, as she says it gives her the freedom and flexibility she needs without having to worry about a mortgage. The 27-year-old rents a one-bedroom apartment in SalfordNew Makers Yard, the canal-side neighborhood of ‘s, for which he pays £1,011 a month.
The product manager and content creator spoke with the Manchester evening news as part of our Where I live series, where each week we chat with a different owner or renter about their trip and the costs involved; while taking a look inside your house.

Sophie, who is from North Wales, has moved to Manchester for a fresh start during lockdown. She had previously rented with a friend, but after her friend bought a house, she decided to rent a place on her own.
“I wanted a fresh start as the end of the lockdown was nearing. She had never lived on her own so it was an exciting time and Manchester is a great city so it was a good place to start,” Sophie told the Manchester evening news.
Renting was initially a short-term plan for Sophie, as she wanted to save up and buy her first home.
“After my friend bought a house, I had to find a place pretty quickly. At the time it was just a short-term thing, as I wanted to buy a house, so I was looking for a place where I could stay for about six months,” he said.
“I saw a lot of different places, but when we passed through here I fell in love. The apartment was already fully furnished, which is great when you’re not sure what your next move is, since you don’t want to buy a lot of furniture.
“A week later, I signed and moved in August 2020.”
Located a short distance from manchester city center, New Makers Yard offers modern furnished one to three bedroom apartments. The pet-friendly development also benefits from a co-working space, separate bar and out-door cafe.
“I spend a lot of time at home because I work from home, so I wanted to live somewhere that felt homey and spacious,” Sophie said.
“The apartment itself is beautiful and the fact that it has a balcony means I can have my own outdoor space without having to leave my apartment.
“It was already fully furnished, which is great when you’re not sure exactly what your next move is going to be, since you don’t want to buy a lot of furniture. It’s very well furnished.
“It has such a nice community feel, it has its own coffee shop and community co-working space. It’s really close to the city, but it’s also quite nice because you’re more on the outskirts.”
As a digital content creator, Sophie often shares images of her home on her instagram account.
“As I do Instagram, living somewhere that looks aesthetically pleasing was also very important,” Sophie said.
“Once I moved I left it exactly as it was. They did a very good job choosing the furniture, I would have chosen many myself.
“There wasn’t really a need to buy anything, I just bought some furniture to make it more homey. I would say the interior style is minimalist and maybe a bit Scandinavian. I like neutral tones and I think small details can make a big difference.
“I have a content corner in my house which is where I film and photograph. It’s a beautiful apartment and it’s very light and bright, so it makes content creation so much easier.”
Giving us a tour of her flat, Sophie described: “When you walk in to the left you have the washer, dryer and storage space and to the right is the kitchen.
“If you carry on walking there’s the bathroom which is really nice with a great shower, then there’s another storage space which is good for the bigger things you don’t want showing.
“If you go further down there is the dining room and living room with a dining table, sofa, chair, some units and a nice coffee table. Then doors lead out to the balcony which is huge.
“In my bedroom there are built-in wardrobes and a king size bed, as well as two bedside tables.
“My favorite part is the living room because I like to keep the balcony doors open so it has a really nice indoor-outdoor feeling.”
Sophie will have lived in her apartment for three years this August and says she has no plans to move anytime soon.
“I’ve been here longer than expected and I’m planning to renew my lease. It’s a really beautiful apartment, I think wherever you go you’re going to pay a lot of money these days so you have to choose what’s important,” Sophie said.
“We’re all like one big family here, which is really nice when you don’t have your own family in the same city. I have a lot of different friends on different blocks and we always get together at night or on weekends and then some of us will work together during the day.
“Maybe I could find somewhere a little cheaper, but I’m well established here and moving is stressful.”
Discussing her plans to move up the property ladder, Sophie says she’s enjoying renting and adjusting to her current lifestyle.
“Obviously with mortgage rates and home prices right now it’s very difficult, especially when you’re doing it on your own,” he said.
“My perspective on renting has completely changed. I used to think of it as a stopgap while I waited to buy, but I think renting gives you that flexibility.”

“For someone like me, who is still quite young, buying is a big commitment. I know some people who bought recently and are now struggling with all the rising cost of living and mortgage payments, but they just have to get by,” added Sophie.
“With rent it’s almost like an all-in in the sense that it might be a little more expensive, but I know exactly what I’m getting.
“I don’t really have any travel expenses because I walk everywhere and my electricity bill is next to nothing because my apartment is so well insulated.”
Giving advice to people looking to rent in Manchester, Sophie said: “I think it’s definitely important that you know your area before you move.
“I love where I live in the sense of being in Salford, but I’m also within walking distance of the city. The people here are very friendly and I think that’s probably the most important thing.”
“You can go look at an apartment and it’s really nice, but having that sense of safety and community I think is key.”
