With the average age of a first time buyer in the UK now being 34, many young people today have no choice but to rent until they have managed to save enough for a deposit.

But for some like Sophie, renting is more than a stopgap, as she says it gives her the freedom and flexibility she needs without having to worry about a mortgage. The 27-year-old rents a one-bedroom apartment in SalfordNew Makers Yard, the canal-side neighborhood of ‘s, for which he pays £1,011 a month.




The product manager and content creator spoke with the Manchester evening news as part of our Where I live series, where each week we chat with a different owner or renter about their trip and the costs involved; while taking a look inside your house.

Sophie, who is from North Wales, has moved to Manchester for a fresh start during lockdown. She had previously rented with a friend, but after her friend bought a house, she decided to rent a place on her own.

“I wanted a fresh start as the end of the lockdown was nearing. She had never lived on her own so it was an exciting time and Manchester is a great city so it was a good place to start,” Sophie told the Manchester evening news.
