A 70-year-old woman from Birmingham has spoken out about her living conditions, as part of a national charity’s efforts to highlight the damage caused by rising poverty rates among older people.

Rajia and her husband say they are “desperate” to move and want to find a home where they can “die in peace”. She said the rats “keep her up at night” and that the landlord was refusing to make necessary repairs to the property.

Statistics published in March 2023 show that in 2021/22, there were 2.1 million (18%) pensioners living in poverty across the UK, 500,000 more than a decade ago.
