It is possible that Rimac was simply gathering data for the autonomous driving system it is being developed to handle popular race tracks around the world. The idea is to give the bravest the experience of a fast lap led by a professional driver.
It is also possible that the team has started preparation work to attempt an official ‘Ring’ time. Rimac in April set 23 records with the Refrigerator in acceleration and braking, and said he aims to set even more records throughout the year.
Records (for a production vehicle) it has already claimed include a 0-60 time of just 1.74 seconds, a quarter-mile time of 8.25 seconds, a mile-stopping time of 20.59 seconds and a time of 0-100-0 kph. time of 3.99 seconds.
Lapping around a racetrack, however, is a very different challenge and generally not suitable for heavy electric vehicles. However, Rimac has gone to great lengths to ensure that the Nevera can drive itself on a track, even though the car weighs 5,070 pounds.
The record lap time to beat at the Nürburgring when it comes to electric cars is the 7:33.35 set by Porsche with a Taycan Turbo S last August. Registration of a production vehicle of any type goes to the Mercedes Benz AMG Onewho achieved a time of 6:35.183 last November.
Deliveries of the Refrigerator began last August, with the first heading to Nico Rosberg, Formula 1 world champion in 2016.
