Well… what a weekend at the Sachsenring! The drama dripped from the start as Marc Márquez (Repsol Honda Team) sought to once again reign in the ring, and it continued all the way to the checkered flag and then he was crowned a new king! The Liqui Moly Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland will live long in the memory, and these are some of the biggest talking points of the weekend!
“I thought it was very close, so something must have happened“
The fight for victory was on the edge of the seat, where Jorge Martin (Prima Pramac Racing) and Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) put on a display in last lap battles while literally going wheel to wheel. In the end, the Spaniard snuck victory through the nose, but only after the two touched during the race, with both drivers reacting to the dramatic incident.

Martin:: “I felt some movement, but I felt the movement almost every lap, so I didn’t notice. When it was the last lap and I saw this gap of two tenths, I said it was strange because I thought it was super close.” So I’m sure something happened. Then I saw it on TV afterwards.”
Bagnaia: “It was very difficult to overtake in turn 1 because coming out of the last corner, we did the whole race in 21, so the rear tire was almost destroyed. I was just trying to start the maneuver before the exit, with the corner accelerating in the last corner to be closer and then try to overtake under braking. But maybe I was too close and then I touched. I tried a different strategy and it didn’t work out, but it’s okay.”
“I don’t feel ready to run”
For Marc Márquez, it turned out to be a hugely disappointing weekend as he chased a 12th victory in 12 visits to the Sachsenring. The eight-time world champion rode his heart out and pushed his RC213V to the absolute limit over the weekend, resulting in a couple of big scares during practice, before finally going down and hitting Johann Zarco (Prima Pramac Racing ) in a large collision. Friday evening. Takaaki Nakagami was the only Honda representative in Sunday’s German GP race, with the LCR Honda driver getting a front-row view of the crash that ruled out Marquez. The Japanese driver offered his perspective after the race and was unable to explain what went wrong in the incident.
“I was behind him and his speed was good, he didn’t do anything wrong. He lost the rear end, the bike didn’t stop the spin and I saw he had a huge high side. I got scared because we used the same bike and it had the same feeling, that corner was very tricky, because we were going downhill and I also lost it a couple of times in that session and even in the race I had the same feeling.So yeah, it was very difficult to ride because the bike is always in motion, less grip, and we have to find a solution to have a safer bike.”

Nakagami, whose contract expires at the end of the current season, also revealed that discussions have been taking place about his future with Honda and that more will follow soon, although he could not give an indication of where he will ride in 2024.

Marco Bezzecchi (Mooney VR46 Racing Team) came home fourth in Sunday’s race, but by all accounts had a relatively quiet weekend compared to the lofty standards he set for himself in 2023. He was also involved in a critical spot with Márquez, and received a conduct warning during free practice, something the Italian did not entirely agree with.

Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™) revealed that he had discussions with Yamaha’s chief executive officer to help develop the YZR-M1 as the 2021 World Champion continues to encounter difficulties.
“Hopefully the process will speed up a bit and [he] see that we are very far from the best brands. So, of course, I already had a meeting with the president.
“It was not planned. I asked because I think, my mentality, I’m a fighter, I want to win, I don’t want to be in this position because I think nobody on the team is enjoying fighting. that’s why. It has been an excellent year to date for KTM as they have taken four podium finishes in Sprint, including one win plus two Grand Prix podium finishes. It looked like they were going for another one at the German GP as well, only disaster struck Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing). The South African was sitting in a nice third place on Sunday, but a crucial mistake saw him make a trip through the gravel trap and dash any hopes of a top three finish.
“My guys did a great job on the bike and I felt amazing. I was riding very clean and saving my tire. I couldn’t run the pace of the first two but I was in third place. Unfortunately when I took the front I braked on the bottom of the hill I locked up the front wheel a little bit and my left foot slipped off the footpeg so I was going off track I kept the lean angle but when I came to pick it up the rear let go and I ended up crashing A disappointment because I know that at least I could have fought for a podium and the team deserved it.”

“There is no bad luck in seven races”
Many had been inclined to challenge once more for honors in 2023, but ever since Maverick Viñales (Aprilia Racing) took the opening weekend podium, the Noale factory has been plagued with problems. Asked if it was a matter of bad luck, the official driver Aleix Espargaró responded forcefully.
“There is no bad luck in seven races. We don’t have the level. That’s all. The Ducatis are on another planet.”
“I said for accuracy that I like my bike. But the bike is 3/4% different than Miguel’s ’22 spec [Oliveira] and you see the RNF results, the factory results are not good. That’s why we don’t improve enough, the level is too much.
“If you look at qualifying today, I think there were eight Ducatis in the top nine. So I think today could finish, I don’t like easy, but I could finish P9 quite well. But I’m aiming for more.” So we tried a bet on the soft tyre, but it didn’t pay off.
It’s a sentiment echoed by RNF cyclist Miguel Oliveira, though the Portuguese ace lavished praise on the job Espargaró is doing.
“Today’s result clearly shows us where we can improve the bike. At the moment, we are not competitive enough. Aleix is doing an amazing job. He is pushing the bike to the limit every time. No luck today with the choice of rear tire ”
