YouTube was the slower main platform to push back against misinformation during the 2020 US election and nearly three years after, the company is scrapping that policy altogether.

The company announced Friday that it would reverse its rules on voter denial, allowing some previously prohibited false claims, effective immediately. Axios first reported the changes.

“In the current environment, we found that while removing this content curbs some misinformation, it could also have the unintended effect of restricting political speech without significantly reducing the risk of violence or other real-world harm.” the company wrote in a blog. mail.

“With that in mind, and with the 2024 campaigns underway, we will stop removing content that makes false claims that widespread fraud, error or glitch occurred in the 2020 and past US Presidential elections.”

YouTube will still not allow some children to make false election-related claims, such as lying about the location of polling places and other targeted efforts to discourage people from successfully casting a ballot.
