For the Palestinian aid organizations behind a $1 million donation from the rapper MacklemoreThere’s more to the Grammy winner’s latest posts than just money.
Macklemore has committed to this donate his net earnings of Ed Sheeran’s Loop Tour after he was dropped for pro-Palestinian statements on stage at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium. The goal, he wrote in a Wednesday post on social media, was to “bring the conversation back to where it belongs” – to the Palestinian people – after a 48-hour period in which there were four Support groups have stopped in solidarity and confusion about who was responsible for the decision.
The six donation recipients included Medical Aid for Palestine, the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund and the UN Agency for Palestine Refugees. UNRWA. In addition to financial resources, its leaders welcomed renewed public awareness of the organization dangerous living conditionsthat the Palestinian people face and deal with on a regular basis.
“Even though you don’t see bombs falling every night, the rubble is still there,” said Alicia Phillips Mandaville, the acting CEO of Anera, another beneficiary. “And the traumatized children are still traumatized.”
Be careful with further requests for help
Tareq Hailat, the director of strategic engagement at the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund, said his phone is ringing “constantly” with calls from people in Gaza “bleeding and asking for help.”
“There is this idea that there is a ceasefire. But that is not true. Children are dying every day. There is our team that is constantly in danger every day on the ground. There are people we have to feed,” he said. “So to bring this attention to this is incredible.”
Have Israeli operations killed more than 1,000 Palestinians since a fragile ceasefire came into effect last October. Hundreds of thousands Palestinians have difficulty receiving medical care in the West Bank. Say the Palestinians Water shortages remain. The world’s top food insecurity agency warned in July that most families in Gaza were still living didn’t get nearly enough to eat although Israel allowed more aid.
The Palestinian Children’s Fund is medically evacuating children who are not receiving the care they need due to the dilapidated health infrastructure and flying in outside doctors to treat others inside the Gaza Strip.
Hailat said the nonprofit will put its share of Macklemore’s donation into an unrestricted fund. The donation will allow leaders to tailor the money more flexibly to evolving circumstances in Gaza.
Anera — a humanitarian aid group that works in Palestine, Lebanon and Jordan — noted that its donation also did not include requirements for how the money would be used. Mandaville said flexibility is important when “the way people live” and “the rules by which we operate” change on a monthly basis.
“If there is flooding again this year like last year, we can deal with it. If there is another acute hunger crisis like in the past, we can deal with it,” she said. “We can buy more blankets because people want their grandparents to be warm at night.”
Macklemore has long supported the Palestinians
This week’s gift wasn’t the first time Macklemore has donated to some of the recipients.
The rapper has long been an advocate for the plight of Palestinians. He previously pledged the proceeds and streaming royalties from his protest anthems “Hind’s Hall” and “Hind’s Hall 2” to UNRWA.
According to Mara Kronenfeld, CEO of UNRWA USA, these royalties have raised more than $509,000 in support.
“He has already helped save probably hundreds of thousands of lives in Gaza through his donations,” she said.
This latest donation is already triggering further donations. Ms. Rachela YouTube star and music teacher, announced Thursday that she would donate $1 million to the Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund and called on others to match the donation.
New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, whose Kraft Group includes Gillette Stadium where Sheeran is scheduled to perform later this month, said in an Instagram post Wednesday that he would match Sheeran’s own $2 million donation to help “in the area.” No information about the recipients of the gift was provided in the post.
Macklemore said his removal was the result of an effort led by Kraft. Kraft said in a statement on Monday that the decision to cancel Macklemore was a result of the rapper’s recent comments “and a broader history of anti-Semitic rhetoric and images.” Macklemore claimed that criticism of the Israeli government should not be equated with anti-Semitism.
Others were inspired to donate
Everyday donors seem to be joining efforts like Ms. Rachel’s. Progressive online influencers have helped raise more than $72,000 for the Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund.
Anera reported that donations it received across social media platforms on Wednesday were more than three times this month’s daily average. The nonprofit has also gained more than 8,000 followers since Macklemore tagged their account in his post. Mandaville hopes the exposure will introduce a new, younger audience to the nonprofit’s work.
“I would guess that our traditional donor doesn’t know the lyrics to ‘Thrift Shop,'” she said, referring to Macklemore’s breakthrough 2012 hit.
UNRWA USA’s Kronenfeld said the increase reflected an existing trend. Her organization has attracted 203,000 donors since October 2023, she said, allowing them to send more than $117 million.
“The donations keep coming in because Americans care,” she said. “With Macklemore’s extremely human gesture, it becomes much more.”
