The pretty coastal port boasts stunning scenery, a historic headland, mile-long beaches and an award-winning marina
Golden sands, ice cream parlours and arcades form a classic British seaside experience that’s hard to beat. Those who grew up building sandcastles and tucking into fish and chips will know the irresistible charm of the UK coast, even when the weather is less than perfect.
While many coastal towns have seen a dip in popularity, with Brits jetting off to sunnier climes like Spain, Hartlepool in County Durham remains a beloved destination.
This picturesque coastal town boasts breathtaking views, miles of sandy beaches and an award-winning marina. It’s also one of the most affordable seaside towns for property hunters in the UK, with house prices significantly lower than the rest of the country.
Rightmove reports that the average house price in Hartlepool over the past year was £153,407, which is nearly half the national average of £286,144 as of November 2024.
The majority of properties sold in Hartlepool during the last year were terraced properties, selling for an average price of £89,362, says Rightmove. Semi-detached properties sold for an average of £154,339, with detached properties fetching £265,745, reports the Mirror.
Nestled by the North Sea, Hartlepool is celebrated for its serene lifestyle and proximity to major urban hubs such as Durham and Teesside. The town has been bolstered by an impressive £631,000 grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, aimed at revitalising the visitor experience at the Museum of Hartlepool and the historic paddle steamer Wingfield Castle.
“It’s anticipated that this funding will support the further development of plans to turn the two attractions into an exciting destination for visitors and local residents alike, telling the story of Hartlepool in a fresh, engaging way, accessible to everyone,” shared Culture Hartlepool.
“Subject to further funding, the transformation itself will include increased and upgraded exhibition spaces, new entrances and better access, interactive features, new community and learning spaces and the restoration and reopening of the Wingfield Castle.”
With a rich nautical past, Hartlepool is synonymous with maritime adventure, making the National Museum of the Royal Navy an essential stop. For family fun, Tweddle Children’s Animal Farm is the place to be, having clinched Trip Advisor’s Travellers’ Choice Award in 2024.
“Explore Hartlepool’s rich seafaring heritage in the Headland area with a visit to HMS Trincomalee, and experience life in an 18th-century seaport at the Hartlepool Maritime Experience,” suggest property specialists at Zoopla.
“The Heugh Battery Museum, a World War I coastal artillery battery and museum, is also well worth a visit. Take a stroll on the sandy shores of Seaton Carew Beach, known for its scenic beauty and seaside charm, and head to Hartlepool Art Gallery to marvel at local talent.”
