What do medical experts say?

Medical experts believe that the reason for the surge in corona cases in the country is the sub-variant XBB.1.16 of Omicron. However, now this sub-variant has mutated and another new sub-variant XBB.1.16.1 has been created.

The Consortium INSACOG, which monitors the variant of Corona, told that so far 436 cases of XBB.1.16.1 have been reported across the country. These cases have come up in 18 states including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Delhi and Haryana.

The XBB.1.16 variant surfaced in January this year when it was confirmed in two samples. According to INSACOG, 2,735 cases of the XBB.1.16 variant have been reported in 24 states.

What is XBB.1.16.1?

Every virus mutates. Due to mutation, its new variants come to the fore. Omicron’s sub-variant XBB.1.16 is believed to be responsible for the increasing cases of corona in India. XBB.1.16.1 sub-variant is a mutated version of XBB.1.16.
