It does a good job, but a little too good a job. I have upscaled several hundred old photos to higher resolution and better sharpness. All of these are real photos but are detected as deepfake.
Remember; even if the photos are real and not AI or fake, they can still lie to you about their true intentions.
tried it on a picture of one of my frends that was edited whit ai and it said real

The implementation likely relies on noise distribution and what would be expected as the output of a model. If an image has natural noise then this will deviate from the expected noise on almost every pixel by at least some amount, and the gen cannot tell that beyond outputting slightly different entire maps depending on its input.
