The usual fare of ne’er-do-wells, miscreants, unfortunates, unlucky and downright criminal were joined at Plymouth Magistrates’ Court by a more unusual case of impersonating a police officer.
One 59-year-old man hoped wearing a “wicking black police T-shirt” would do the trick at Derriford Hospital’s accident and emergency department. He’s now around £400 lighter in the pocket as a result.
One shoplifter went on somewhat of a spree, walking out the doors of Poundland, Sainsbury’s, Iceland, River Island, Hobbycraft, Co-op and Superdrug with more than £2,000 worth of goods. She was told she would have to pay £100 in compensation – after she came out of prison.
It goes without saying there are still those who feel that a few lines of cocaine, a few bottles of beer, a few joints are entirely fine before they get behind the wheel of a car and drive down streets where the slightest miscalculation could end up killing themselves, or others, or both. Fines are what follow, along with demands to pay court costs and the victim surcharge, and that’s before they have to hand back their driving licence for months, or even years, with all the inconvenience that then causes and the potential loss of earnings, job or even home.
