I think the greatest flaw in society is the widespread belief that people are always owed a baseline level of respect. I can see why, at first, this looks like a good idea, but I have come to believe that respect is something that can be solely gained upon merit.
A close second is the pedestal we put respect on. Respect is nothing more than an informal contract between people; formality that exists to make intetactions faster, easier, and more comfortable.
You gain respect by being respectful, because the respect you give should be reciprocated.
There is simply no point in respecting someone who will not respect you. The social contract will never be fulfilled and that makes the attempt to do so, pointless. It follows, then, that if your parents dont respect you, there is no reason to respect them or even to be circumspect in your disrespect. There is nothing quite like, at a family gathering, informing your uncle that you do not respect yout mother and the only one who can change that is her.
