The excess water then runs off into a 70-liter teardrop-shaped container for future use. This not only reduces the consumption of tap water but also provides your plants with better-quality water, free from salts and chemicals. Made using wind energy and 100% recyclable, the Elho Pure Raindrop is the epitome of eco-friendly gardening.

Leave it to the robotic lawnmower

EcoFlow Blade + Sweeper Kit, £3,199
EcoFlow Blade + Sweeper Kit, £3,199

A cross between a Martian rover and a robo-dog, the Blade is undeniably cute, and while its most notable feature is a big red STOP button, which doesn’t inspire confidence, there were no emergencies or even minor dangers during testing. It consists of four parts: the Blade itself, a charging station, an antenna, and the sweeping attachment. The EcoFlow app helps you position the charging station and antenna; once optimally positioned, secure them and store the cable connecting them, together with another cable from the station to the mains supply. On Blade’s first run, you manually guide it along the edge of the area you want to mow or sweep (up to a maximum of 3,000 sq m, just under half a football field) using the app as a joystick. It then works diligently on its own, sticking to the limits you set.

Because its front wheels point inward at an angle, it’s not the most graceful of movers, but when it reaches an edge it can neatly pirouette and continue its geometric course. (You’re left with very satisfying streaks in the grass.) The wheels are large enough that rough terrain isn’t a problem, it automatically circles around obstacles, and if it starts raining, it returns to the charging station (because mowing in the rain doesn’t that’s a great idea, robot or not.) The sweeper, which can operate independently of any mowing activity, slots neatly into the back, picking up leaves, twigs and grass ready for manual emptying. Turn on the furnace

Ooni Volt 12 Electric Pizza Oven, £799

Ooni Volt 12 Electric Pizza Oven, £799

Given the opportunity, pizza oven nerds will talk at length about the pitfalls of attempting an authentic backyard Neapolitan, including the charcoal strategy. Thankfully Ooni has made such conversations redundant with this all-electric pizza oven (its first) for indoor or outdoor use. Operation couldn’t be simpler: there’s a temperature dial, a timer, and a third dial to adjust the heat balance between the top and bottom heating elements. The only thing separating you from a delicious stone baked pizza is human error, in my case too sticky dough. My second attempt was magical and, at a scorching 450ºC, I only had to wait two minutes. A cool water tank for the greenest gardener

Elho Pure Raindrop, £375

Elho Pure Raindrop, £375

Most water butts are pretty nasty, but this was the result of a graduate design project that gathered significant momentum and has since won a number of awards. A built-in five-litre jug automatically refills whenever it rains for easy use in and around the garden, while the excess runs off into the 70-litre teardrop shaped container below. In addition to reducing the consumption of tap water, rainwater is better for plants than tap water: less salts and chemicals, more nitrates. The product is made using wind energy and as you might expect is 100% recyclable. Elho Pure Raindrop, £375, elho.com

A film on the lawn

Nreal Air goggles, £400
Nreal Air goggles, £400

Smart glasses have gotten a bad rap pretty quickly. Early adopters of Google Glass found themselves confronted, assaulted and barred from locations on suspicion of surveillance. The Nreal Air, however, sidesteps these issues by having no camera, just a built-in display that lets you translate your phone or tablet screen directly into your line of sight. A slightly irritating USB cable runs from the spec’s left arm to your device, but they’re light (79g), have decent built-in speakers, and the experience of watching movies on a huge virtual screen while relaxing in your lawn chair is extraordinary enough to justify the price tag. Better yet, you probably won’t get punched in the face. Nreal Air, £400, ee.co.uk

Weather issue…

Ecowitt WittBoy GW2001 Weather Station, $199.99

Ecowitt WittBoy GW2001 Weather Station, $199.99

Never underestimate the amount of delicious data that can be collected from a device the size of an eggplant on a post in your garden. The solar-powered WittBoy (with AA battery backup) sends weather information to a small WiFi-connected hub in your home, which also monitors conditions indoors. The resulting graphs, viewable on an app or on the web, were like catnip to my inner geek: temperature, humidity, precipitation, wind, air pressure, and UVI, all plotted live and archived for viewing. That data feeds into a map of local weather stations, letting you wonder why it’s half a degree hotter a mile down the road. Additional sensors will measure soil moisture and air quality.
