Former President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, is preparing to introduce one Memecoina novel form of cryptocurrency typically based on a famous person or meme that has no actual purpose but can gain value through social media hype. In one post On Monday, the younger Biden shared a video that repeatedly mentioned “laptop,” an apparent reference to the controversy surrounding his computer during the 2020 campaign. The token will trade under the ticker symbol $LAPTOP and is scheduled to launch on September 9.
The Wall Street Journal First reported the news. The token is traded on Base, the network built by cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, with a supply of one billion. The magazine also reported that the founders, including Biden, will hold 30% of the token supply, which will be locked for six months.

Another 20% of the supply is to be distributed through two free token gifts to people who lost money trading TRUMP, the memecoin started from President Donald Trump in January 2025, as well as subscribers to Biden’s Substack. Recipients on a mailing list run by Biden’s friend, video journalist Andrew Callaghan, are also eligible, although Callaghan later said he had nothing to do with the token’s launch.
Biden would be the latest high-profile figure to launch a memecoin. In January, former New York Mayor Eric Adams made the announcement NYC tokens at a press conference in Times Square. This was followed by the introduction of memecoins by Trump and the First Lady Melania Trump a year earlier. These tokens fell sharply in the days following their debut, quickly leading to accusations that they were rug pulls, a crypto term for projects in which insiders abruptly sell large holdings, causing heavy losses to other investors.
The project apparently aims to end the long-running laptop controversy behind Biden by turning the source of online ridicule into a memecoin. In April 2019, Biden dropped off the computer at one Repair shop in Delaware. The Federal Bureau of Investigation seized it five months later. The laptop reportedly contained information about Biden’s business dealings abroad and his personal life during a time when he was struggling with addiction.
The initiative quickly sparked backlash from X.
“You criticize Trump for committing a fraud and then commit one yourself,” one user wrote.
“And with that your reputation goes down the drain again.” said another.
Some platforms that announced they would list LAPTOP later withdrew their promotional posts as criticism mounted. Kraken, one of the largest crypto exchanges, deleted a post about the token after users asked why it was marketing another politically linked coin.
