A man fears that his mother may be fatally injured if she continues to live in the same house.

Veronica Cuthbertson, 76, has been unable to leave her flat in Walton for the past two years except for going by ambulance to Royal Liverpool Hospital. Her son Kevin said the floor is no longer accessible to his mother, who has become increasingly unsteady on her feet and prone to falls.

Kevin said he has contacted Torus, the property’s owner, numerous times to ask if his mom and dad can be moved to a more affordable home. The couple have since moved from Band D to Band C, a category that gives them “medium priority” when bidding on other homes in the Property Group.

But with suitable homes taken before his parents have a chance to bid on them, Kevin feels this category doesn’t accurately reflect the urgency of the situation.

The 46-year-old told ECHO: “My mother falls all the time. She has been homebound for two years.

“She’s been out of the house twice [in two years] to go to the hospital by ambulance. When you leave, you can’t go back in.

“Wherever you get close to the flat, you have to climb a hill to get in. There are steps and then you go up to the flat. There is a big heavy door that she can’t open by herself, she has no strength.”

Veronica suffered a black eye following a recent fall at home last week, which resulted in her being taken to Royal Liverpool Hospital. Kevin said, “If she falls on something hard and hits her head, she’ll kill her.”

Kevin said his mother is now dependent on his 76-year-old father Colin, who has COPD and also has difficulty accessing the apartment. He asks Torus to send someone to the property to assess his mother’s needs.

He said: “No one has come out to see her. All I want is an affordable place for them to live, near a supermarket. I’m not asking them for anything.”

Gaynor Johnson, Director of Housing Services at Torus, said: “Torus properties are allocated via Property Pool Plus (PPP), bands are awarded in accordance with the Local Authority Allocations Policy, not by Torus.

“They have been informed that a neighborhood officer will be contacting them to discuss the support available and to see if assistance can be provided at home and to further assess the couple’s current health conditions and limitations to make sure they are in good condition. the correct priority band.

“We have provided the couple with information about HomeSwapper, the UK’s leading mutual exchange service with over 500,000 tenants, which seeks to swap council homes and the Housing Association, of which Torus is a member and tenants can use for free. We have also offered to help them apply, if they are interested, to Access Liverpool, which works in partnership with registered providers across the city to allocate affordable housing.

“We will continue to keep in touch with the couple to see if we can be of further assistance as they wait to be relocated.”
