  1. From a preschool teacher, heres my top potty training tips.

    They are ready when:
1 – Wake Up from naps or sleep dry repeatedly
2 – Seek privacy to go #2 (squatting in a corner, under a table, etc)
3 – if they are talking about peeing or pooping or changing at all its time

    Tips for training:
1 – Normalize, take them to the bathroom for your trips (obviously teachers and other care givers can not do this step but as the parent you can)
2 – Make it a schedule (every hour they sit for 2 minutes on the pot, and if you think they are about to go or they are going rush them to the bathroom)
3 – Avoid food rewards, and make the reward something they really want and have it ONLY for potty time (example: they actually go pee then after washing hands you put on their favorite song and dance with them)
4 – let them make mistakes without a diaper. Take them to a park on the weekends or play outside, keep a close eye on and let them be out of diapers. And when if they dont make it every time to the potty, walk slow to bathroom. This is not to embarrass or punish them. Do NOT make a spectacle but let them feel the uncomfortable and it will happen less! A lot of kids can’t feel it in the diaper
5 – Make underwear exciting! While training pick the kind they want to wear. I know elsa and paw patrol were super motivating last year
6 – No yelling or punishing. If it becomes shameful it will take WAY longer. I know it can be a long process for some kiddos, but please know that this is their first time at a lot of things. They have to identify that they need to go, learn how much time they have till they go, learn what going feels like, and learn the consequences of what happens when they go. They need a lot of grace, love and encouragement!

  2. As a teacher who works with kids who are still learning toileting skills, let me tell you the pause and do nothing is the scariest. I'm supposed to help them learn to use the toilet and it always sucks when they just stop and you realize you haven't reminded them to go potty in an hour.
